Submental Liposuction
Reducing fat under the chin to improve neck contour and airway space.
What it is
Submental liposuction is the targeted removal of fat from the submental region (the area directly under the chin, above the front of the neck). It is performed through one or two tiny incisions hidden in the natural crease under the chin, using a slender cannula to vacuum out fat in a controlled, even pattern.
Why we do it
Fat in the submental and upper neck region does more than affect appearance. It contributes directly to airway crowding by pressing on the soft tissues of the throat from the outside. Patients with increased neck circumference (greater than 17 inches in men, 16 inches in women) have measurably higher rates of obstructive sleep apnea. Reducing submental fat, particularly in combination with weight loss and other airway interventions, decreases the soft-tissue load on the airway and improves the visual proportion of the lower face.
What happens during the procedure
Performed under local anesthesia with mild sedation (or general anesthesia when combined with another procedure). The submental area is infiltrated with a tumescent solution that numbs the tissue and constricts blood vessels. A 3 millimeter cannula is then used to remove fat through small incisions. The skin redrapes over the new contour as healing progresses.
Who it’s for
Patients with localized fullness under the chin that does not improve with weight loss, particularly those with reasonable skin elasticity. Often combined with weight management and airway treatment. Most effective for patients aged 25 to 60. Patients with significant skin laxity may benefit more from a combined neck procedure.
Recovery and what to expect
A compression chin garment is worn for one week, then at night for two more weeks. Bruising and swelling resolve in 7 to 10 days. Most patients return to work in three to five days. The final contour settles at three months.
