Adult Clear Aligner Therapy
Straightening adult teeth without compromising the airway.
What it is
Clear aligner therapy uses a sequential series of custom transparent plastic trays to move teeth into a planned final position. Each tray is worn for one to two weeks, and each one moves the teeth a small amount (typically 0.2 to 0.3 millimeters per stage). The number of trays in a course ranges from 14 to over 60 depending on case complexity. The most common system is Invisalign, but several equivalent systems exist.
Why we do it
For adults, aesthetics matter, function matters, and the airway matters. Traditional adult orthodontics is often performed with extractions to make room for crowded teeth, which can narrow the dental arch and reduce the space available for the tongue. Airway-focused aligner therapy uses non-extraction approaches whenever possible, often combined with interproximal reduction (a small amount of enamel polishing between teeth) or arch development to create space. The result is straighter teeth without compromising tongue space or airway volume.
What happens during the procedure
Initial visit includes a 3D digital scan of the teeth, photographs, and X-rays. A virtual treatment plan is generated and reviewed with the patient before any trays are made. Trays are then manufactured and shipped in batches. Patients change trays at home on a schedule and return to the clinic every 8 to 12 weeks for progress checks. Small composite attachments are sometimes bonded to certain teeth to give the trays better grip for specific movements.
Who it’s for
Adults with mild to moderate crowding, spacing, mild to moderate bite issues, or who want to refine prior orthodontic work. Compliance is essential. Trays must be worn 20 to 22 hours per day to track with the planned movements. Patients with severe skeletal issues, complex rotations, or significant bite collapse are usually better served by a combined orthognathic-and-aligner plan.
Recovery and what to expect
No recovery. Mild pressure or soreness for one to two days after each new tray is normal and is the feeling of the teeth moving.
